What Bow Type Should I Choose?
The bow refers to the curve in a hockey stick. Different bow profiles are designed to assist with different skills, so the best option depends on your playing style, position and experience level.
Standard Bow
A Standard Bow has a more traditional curve and is designed to maximise control and power. It is a great option for players who focus on strong passing, trapping and hitting.
Standard Bows are typically around 19mm and are positioned closer to the middle of the stick.
Best for: Beginners, defenders, midfielders and players who prioritise control and powerful hitting.
Mid Bow
A Mid Bow offers a balance between control, power and skill development. It provides slightly more assistance with lifting the ball and developing aerial and technical skills while still maintaining a traditional feel.
Mid Bows are typically around 22mm, with the maximum bow positioned approximately 300mm from the head of the stick.
Best for: All-round players who want a versatile stick that balances control, power and skill.
Low Bow
A Low Bow has the curve positioned lower down the shaft, closer to the head of the stick. This makes it easier to get underneath the ball and perform skills such as lifting, aerial passes, flicking and 3D skills.
Low Bows are typically around 24mm, with the maximum bow positioned approximately 250mm from the head.
Best for: Attacking players, skill-focused players and those who regularly use aerials, flicking and 3D skills.
Extreme Bow
An Extreme Bow has the curve positioned very low on the stick, providing maximum assistance with advanced technical skills. It is particularly suited to drag flicking, aerials, 3D skills and lifted passes. Some Extreme Bow sticks also feature a groove or channel to assist with drag flicking.
Extreme Bows are typically around 24mm, with the maximum bow positioned approximately 200mm from the head.
Best for: Advanced attacking players, drag flickers and players who regularly use aerial and 3D skills.
Quick Guide
- Want maximum control and powerful hitting? → Choose a Standard Bow
- Want a versatile, all-round stick? → Choose a Mid Bow
- Want help with aerials, flicking and 3D skills? → Choose a Low Bow
- Want maximum assistance with drag flicking and advanced skills? → Choose an Extreme Bow
Still unsure? As a general rule, the more advanced and lower-positioned the bow, the more it assists with aerial and technical skills. However, a more aggressive bow isn't always better — choosing the bow that best suits your playing style and skill level will help you get the most out of your stick.
